Six months after being shot and critically wounded during a constituent event in her home district in January during an attempted assassination attempt, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords made a surprise return to the House floor on Monday to vote in favor of an agreement to raise the debt limit.
She entered the House chambers through a side door while her colleagues were voting on a concession to raise the national debt ceiling. Her arrival prompted applause on the Democratic side of the chamber, which gradually spread through the House.
Giffords voted “yes” on the bill, which drew new applause as a green “Y” appeared next to her name on the House’s back wall. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi took the microphone and called the congresswoman, who is still recovering from her injuries, “the personification of courage.”
